2023 Spring

Governmental services are paid through property taxes which are listed on your annual property tax statement from the Cook County Assessor’s Office.  As Highway Commissioner of Palatine Township, we can help to reduce your taxes by levying or asking for less money, which we have done once again this year.  Our portion of the tax burden is further split, as we receive approximately half the amount.  The other half is used by local municipalities to fund their own road improvement and maintenance programs.  Such programs include patching, crack sealing, resurfacing and complete restoration of neighborhood roadways.  Also included are capital costs for new equipment and vehicles to maintain these roadways.

Our 2024 Fiscal Year Operating Budget and Appropriation was approved earlier this year and is for the time covered from April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024.  Each year is completely different from year’s past as we account for equipment, building, and infrastructure maintenance and replacement costs.  Like most everyone, we continue to plan for a possible third year of inflation, ongoing supply chain shortages, and energy increases.  This operating budget is tied to the 2022 Tax Levy, which is the actual tax burden placed on the constituents of Palatine Township.  As mentioned, the levy has been reduced and is on a downward trend.

Part of the operating budget is to make necessary infrastructure improvements and as winter season moves out, the construction season begins.  We plan to make roadway improvements along the Hillside Road corridor, in the northwest quarter of the Township.  The roadways will be milled, patched, resurfaced, and shouldered with topsoil, and grass seed.  Additionally, we replace failing culverts through driveways.  When you are ready to replace your driveway, you may want to check with the Road District.  Chances are the culvert under your driveway needs replacing.  An old, compromised culvert may deteriorate your new driveway.  To apply, we require a permit application.  Permits are free of charge, easy to complete, and can be found on our website, roaddistrict.com.

Continued services that have been scheduled this year include our Tire Amnesty Program, yard waste collection and free compost stockpiles.  Early each spring, on selected Saturdays, anyone living in Palatine Township can drop off their used tires free of charge at our garage.  If you are a resident of Palatine Township, stop by and unload your old tires at the Road District Garage, located at: 530 N. Smith Street, Palatine.  The tire amnesty program will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Earth Day, Saturday April 22, 2023, and Saturday April 29, 2023.  There will be a limit of 10 tires and tires from commercial vendors will not be accepted.  We will begin our annual yard waste collection for the unincorporated areas on April 3, 2023, and will continue through Thanksgiving week, November 20, 2023.  After collecting the waste, we process the material by grinding it, turning it, and letting it age for a year as it breaks down into compost.  We will continue to offer free compost for anyone to pick-up at the Road District Garage and Town Hall locations.  Please call for availability, as this material is quickly consumed.

Thank you for your continued support and consideration.  We will continue to ensure that Palatine Township Road District will be available for all your infrastructure concerns and strive to meet your expectations.  If you have any questions, concerns or need any additional information regarding our services, please feel free to email me at adelmar@palatinetownship-il.gov.
